NRC Authorizes Vogtle Unit 3 Fuel Loading and Operation

In August, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) authorized Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) to load nuclear fuel and begin operation at Vogtle Unit 3 in Georgia. Vogtle Units 3 and 4 are Westinghouse AP1000 reactors – the only AP1000 reactors under construction in the U.S. This is the first U.S. reactor to be licensed and constructed under NRC’s combined license process. The plant has been moved from construction oversight to reactor oversight; while Unit 4 remains under construction. Unit 3 is expected to begin commercial operation late 2022 or early 2023. Unit 4 is expected to begin operation approximately one year later.
