International Questionnaire: Recovery of Tracking Tags Inserted in Small Dangerous Goods Packages

Posted:

2 September 2026

Project context

WNTI has launched a new Task Group on Implementing Tags for Tracking to assess the potential use of tracking tags inside small dangerous goods packages transported by air.

Small dangerous goods packages, including packages containing radioactive materials, may occasionally be temporarily misplaced during transport, particularly during air transport and associated transfer and handling operations.

The purpose of the Task Group is to:

  • Identify and address issues related to the air transport of groupage.
  • Highlight industry best practices and recommendations.
  • Clarify that all radioactive material transport is included, except:
    > Transport subject to physical protection requirements, as this is already monitored.
    > High-consequence dangerous goods/materials, as defined in the European ADR Model Regulations, §1.4.3.

To support this work, the Task Group has launched a survey to gather feedback from stakeholders across the transport chain on the potential use of tracking technologies for radioactive material shipments.

Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and contribute to this  initiative.
