Derek Ray-Hill appointed Chief Executive of the World Nuclear Transport Institute

Professor Bryant is leaving WNTI to become Director of the newly established Chadwick Institute for Nuclear Innovation at the University of Liverpool.

Derek Ray-Hill said:

“I am delighted to be taking on this role at such an important time for the nuclear sector. The world depends upon the safe, secure and sustainable transport of radioactive materials for medicine, low-carbon energy, research and industry.

“I look forward to building on Pete’s achievements and working with WNTI’s members, staff and international partners to strengthen its impact and help keep nuclear moving.”

Professor Bryant said:

“It has been an enormous privilege to lead WNTI, and I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together. That progress reflects the hard work and commitment of our fantastic team and membership, and I am particularly proud to leave WNTI with a stronger international voice and the largest membership in its history.

“I am delighted to be handing the organisation over to Derek and am confident he will build on these strong foundations. While I am moving on to an exciting new role at the University of Liverpool, I am very pleased that this is not goodbye, and I look forward to continuing to support WNTI as a technical adviser.”

Professor Bryant will remain a technical adviser to WNTI and will continue to contribute to important initiatives, including the recently launched WNTI Summer School.

Derek Ray-Hill is an experienced chief executive and international leader who has spent more than 25 years working across membership organisations, charities, business and public policy.

He was most recently Interim Chief Executive of the Internet Watch Foundation, one of the world’s leading organisations dedicated to identifying and removing online child sexual abuse material. During his tenure, he led the organisation through a period of strategic and regulatory change, strengthened its engagement with government and industry, and supported the development of new services to help companies meet their online-safety responsibilities.

Derek previously served as Director of International Strategy at the Charities Aid Foundation, where he worked with a network of partners spanning more than 50 countries and developed relationships with organisations including the United Nations Development Programme, the World Bank, USAID and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

His earlier roles include senior leadership positions at London First, now BusinessLDN, and BBC Worldwide. Throughout his career, he has worked with governments, regulators, international institutions, businesses and civil-society organisations to address complex challenges requiring collaboration across organisational and national boundaries.

Originally from Montreal, Canada, Derek has lived and worked in the United Kingdom for more than 25 years.

Professor Peter Bryant is an internationally recognised specialist in radiation protection, nuclear policy and stakeholder engagement. Before joining WNTI, he held senior leadership roles at Sizewell C and EDF, including Director of ESG and Radiation Strategy and Head of Environment, Decommissioning and Radiation Safety.

He serves on the International Commission on Radiological Protection, supports the International Atomic Energy Agency and is a member of the UK Government’s Committee on Radioactive Waste Management. He will take up his new position as Director of the Chadwick Institute for Nuclear Innovation at the University of Liverpool in September 2026.

The World Nuclear Transport Institute is the international voice of the nuclear transport industry. It brings together organisations involved in the safe, secure, efficient and sustainable transport of nuclear and radioactive materials.
