WNTI at the Waste Management Symposia 2026

Efficient and Innovative Nuclear Materials and Technology Solutions

Overview

The Waste Management Symposia 26 (WM26) is the world’s largest international conference covering radioactive waste management, decommissioning, and used fuel. Held in Phoenix, Arizona from 8–12 March it marked the 52nd edition of the event and brought together more than 2,500 attendees from over 45 countries.

Under the theme “Efficient and Innovative Nuclear Materials and Technology Solutions,” the conference hosted discussions across twelve technical tracks, spanning high‑ and low‑level waste, spent fuel, packaging and transportation, decommissioning, environmental remediation, advanced technologies, and workforce development.

Marc Flynn, WNTI Committee Chair of Back End

Marc presented an integrated overview of WNTI’s back‑end activities, drawing on the combined work of the previous Spent Fuel Management (SFM) and Waste Decommissioning & Disposal (WDD) Working Groups. He outlined the technical and operational challenges common to both groups. He also highlighted key outputs delivered to date, such as guidance on SNF management and preparation processes, and summary papers on package ageing assessment and alternatives to physical testing.

Marc further explained WNTI’s ongoing transition from these previous Working Groups to a new Committee & Task Group structure. He introduced the priority Task Groups for 2026—reuse of existing package designs, long‑term SNF storage before transport, and international challenges associated with transporting SNF to a GDF—while positioning these efforts within WNTI’s 2025–2030 strategy. He also referenced WNTI’s broader strategic initiatives, including expanded partnerships, the World Nuclear Transport Conference 2026, and the WNTI Summer School.

UK Pavilion

WNTI participated in the United Kingdom Pavilion at WM26, where Sharon represented the organisation and engaged with a diverse range of delegates from across the global nuclear community. As the conference brings together decision makers, project managers, and procurement specialists from government agencies and private organisations involved in radioactive waste management, decommissioning, and site remediation, the extensive discussions at the pavilion helped elevate the profile of WNTI and highlight our commitment to promoting safe, secure, and sustainable nuclear transport.

Working closely with fellow UK partners in the pavilion, WNTI strengthened ties within the UK nuclear community and initiated dialogue with key international organisations, paving the way for future collaboration and potential new memberships.

In 2027, the United Kingdom will be the host country of the Symposia and therefore an opportunity for WNTI members to be involved and continue raising our profile. As plans progress, please keep your eye on the WNTI website for further details.
