Radiation Detection Drone Tested

In a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the state of Ohio, the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant (GDP) tested a drone, which was fitted with radiation detectors in order to collect data for the Ohio Department of Health (ODH).

The drone has video and photographic capabilities and can connect wirelessly to a laptop. Data can also be shared through a smartphone application.

The data collected through the testing will be analyzed to determine if the technology is beneficial for use at DOE’s cleanup sites. The testing allowed ODH to have access to radioactive source material in order to confirm the detection capabilities of the drones and detection equipment. In the event of an incident involving radioactive materials, this type of technology may be useful for determining exclusion zones.
