Vessel Carrying Russian Enriched Uranium Held in German Port

In March, CIS Navigation’s Atlantic Navigator II, a 633-foot-long Marshall Islands-flagged vessel, departed from St. Petersburg in the Russian Federation with enriched uranium and other cargo. The vessel was bound for the U.S. The vessel was forced to call at the port in Rostock, Germany on March 4 due to damage to its propeller.

Since that time, the vessel has been held by German authorities due to the presence of lumber, which is sanctioned by the EU. Neither the lumber nor the enriched uranium are sanctioned in the U.S., the ultimate destination.

Meanwhile, the enriched uranium, which is destined for the US market, has been held up for almost a month. The US government is reported to be working diplomatically to try to get the shipment of enriched uranium released.
