NRC Seeks Public Input on the Scope of an Environmental Review for TRISO-X LLC’s Fuel Fabrication Facility

In December, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) published a notice in the U.S. Federal Register to seek public input on the scope of its environmental review of TRISO-X LLC’s proposed nuclear fuel fabrication facility to be built in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

TRISO-X, a wholly owned subsidiary of X-Energy LLC, has applied for a license to construct and operate a facility for the fabrication of high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel for advanced reactors.

The NRC will conduct a safety and technical review of TRISO-X’s license application as well as develop an environmental impact statement (EIS) to analyze the proposed facility’s potential environmental impacts.

NRC will hold a public meeting on January 25, 2023 in Oak Ridge, TN.  Public comments will be accepted through February 14, 2023. Comments may be submitted through the federal government’s rulemaking website, www.regulations.gov, using Docket ID NRC-2022-0201; by email to [email protected]; or by U.S. Mail to Office of Administration, Mail Stop: TWFN-7-A60M, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001, ATTN: Program Management, Announcements and Editing Staff.

TRISO-X’s license application to the NRC, which was submitted in April 2022 and accepted by NRC in November 2022 can be found here.
