Founded as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost in 1718, in 1731 San Antonio became the first chartered civil settlement in what is now present-day Texas. The area was then part of the Spanish Empire. From 1821 to 1836, it was part of the Mexican Republic. It is the oldest municipality in Texas, having celebrated its 300th anniversary on May 1, 2018. The conference hotel is located along the famous San Antonio River Walk, a city park and special-case pedestrian street one level down from the automobile street. The River Walk winds and loops under bridges as two parallel sidewalks lined with restaurants and shops, connecting the major tourist draws such as the Shops at Rivercenter, the Arneson River Theatre, Marriage Island, La Villita, HemisFair Park, the Tower Life Building, the San Antonio Museum of Art, the Pearl, and the city’s five Spanish colonial missions (including the Alamo), which have been named a World Heritage Site.
