WNTI is pleased to announce the signing of a new Practical Arrangement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), marking an important milestone in our ongoing collaboration to ensure the safe, secure and sustainable transport of nuclear and other radioactive materials.

Held at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna on 19 September 2025, the ceremony brought together senior representatives from both organisations. The agreement was signed by Prof. Pete Bryant, WNTI CEO, and Karine Herviou, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security. They were joined by Hildegarde Vandenhove, Director of the Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety, and Elena Buglova, Director of the Division of Nuclear Security, along with other IAEA officials. Representing WNTI were Kuni Kinoshita, Elisa Penda and Simon Chaplin from the Secretariat.

The Commitment

The Practical Arrangement builds on WNTI’s long-standing relationship with the IAEA, including our Observer Status and active engagement in technical work streams. It sets out a framework for collaboration in areas such as technical work streams, coordinated research projects, capacity building, stakeholder engagement, and the development of innovative approaches to future transport challenges.

Prof. Pete Bryant's Comment

“With nuclear energy expanding globally- through large reactors, SMRs, AMRs, and new applications such as transportable and floating nuclear power plants and nuclear propulsion – the demand for trusted transport systems has never been greater.”

What This Means For You

For our members, this Practical Arrangement represents an opportunity to ensure that industry expertise and experience are directly informing global policy and practice. It is also closely aligned with WNTI’s new 2025–2030 Strategy, reflecting our shared commitment with the IAEA to move Forward Together – Safely, Securely, Sustainably.
