Mark Carney Announces First Projects Under New Major Projects Office

The Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, announced the launch of the new Major Projects Office (MPO). The MPO was created under the Building Canada Act, which came into force in June 2025. MPO was launched on August 29, 2025, under the leadership of Dawn Farrell as its first Chief Executive Officer. The MPO will work to fast-track large projects by streamlining regulatory assessment and approvals and helping to structure financing, in close partnership with provinces, territories, Indigenous Peoples, and private investors. The initial projects under the MPO include construction of small modular reactors (SMR) at the Darlington Nuclear Power Plant site.

The Darlington New Nuclear Project, which includes construction of up to four SMRs, will provide power to 300,000 homes, support 3,700 jobs annually, including 18,000 during construction, over the next 65 years. This project has already received construction authorisation for the first GE-Hitachi BWRX-300 SMR.

Further details about this project can be found here.
