Canada’s Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) Signs DGR Contractors

In May, Canada’s Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) announced that it selected five companies to design Canada’s deep geological repository (DGR) for disposal of spent nuclear fuel.

The organization announced its siting decision in late 2024 in Northern Ontario. The companies selected, which include WSP Canada Inc., Peter Kiewit Sons ULC (Kiewit), Hatch Ltd., Thyssen Mining Construction of Canada Ltd. and Kinectrics Inc., will assist in the development of site infrastructure, design, engineering, construction planning, construction, and will provide management advisory services.

Construction can begin following completion of the Canadian government’s regulatory process, which includes a Regulatory Assessment and Approval Process.
