Potential Strike by International Longshoremen’s Association at U.S. East and Gulf Coast Ports

As reported in the December 2024 Member News, the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) continued to negotiate with the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX) to avert a strike at U.S. east coast and U.S. gulf coast ports. The pending negotiation deadline was January 15, 2025. In early January, the union reached a tentative deal with USMX on a new six-year contract.  The deal includes a resolution regarding automation at the ports, which was one of the most important issues to ILA.

According to reports, the agreement establishes a framework for implementing technologies, such as automation, that will create jobs but also allow modernization of the ports on the east coast and gulf coast of the U.S. The terms of the contracts were not closed. A vote on the contract is scheduled to take place in late February.
