U.S. NRC Schedule for Harmonization with SSR-6 Slips Again

In early December, in advance of WNTI’s SSR-6 Working Group meeting, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) web site showed that NRC planned to publish a proposed rulemaking in the U.S. Federal Register to harmonize U.S. radioactive materials transportation regulations with the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) transport safety regulations in SSR-6, 2012 and 2018 editions.

At that time, according to the NRC’s rulemaking web site, the proposed rule was expected to be published in Federal Register in mid-December 2021 and the final rule was to be published in late May 2022.

Review of the rulemaking web site in late December 2021 revealed that the dates have slipped yet again – the proposed rule is scheduled to be published by January 31, 2022 and the final rule will be signed by March 31, 2023 with final publication by November 27, 2023.
