NRC Commissioners Approve Rulemaking to Harmonize Transportation Requirements with IAEA Standards

View NRC rulemaking
In July, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved the issuance of a proposed rule to harmonize the NRC’s regulations with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) standards and ensure conformance with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.

DOT is planning a similar action to harmonize its regulations with IAEA standards and the NRC rulemaking will help to maintain a consistent federal regulatory framework for the packaging and transportation of radioactive materials, which is coregulated by the NRC and DOT.

According to the NRC web site, the proposed rule will be published in December 2021. When the proposed rule is published, links to the proposed rule and information regarding public hearings will be provided to WNTI members.
