24 June 2024

We are pleased to announce that this June, Nordion Inc, a leading provider of medical isotopes and radiation technologies, officially became the newest member of the World Nuclear Transport Institute (WNTI). We are thrilled to welcome Nordion to WNTI. Their expertise and long-standing commitment to safety and innovation in the nuclear sector will be invaluable to our mission. Nordion’s membership underscores the importance of collaboration in achieving our shared goals of safe and secure nuclear transport.

Founded in 1946, Nordion has built a robust reputation in the field of nuclear medicine, supplying isotopes for cancer treatment, sterilisation of medical equipment and various industrial applications. The company’s decision to join WNTI comes as part of its ongoing efforts to align with international best practices and contribute to the global discourse on nuclear transport.

WNTI, established in 1998, is an internationally recognised organisation that represents the collective interests of the nuclear transport industry. The Institute plays a critical role in fostering collaboration among stakeholders, promoting high standards of safety, security and regulatory compliance in the transportation of nuclear and radioactive materials.

The integration of Nordion into WNTI is expected to foster new collaborations and innovations, benefiting not only the member organisations but also the broader nuclear transport industry. With Nordion’s extensive experience and pioneering technologies, the partnership aims to address some of the most pressing challenges in the sector, such as the ongoing issue of Delay and Denial of Shipments affecting the global nuclear and radioactive material industry.

As a WNTI member, Nordion will participate in various working groups, technical committees and international forums, contributing to the development of guidelines and policies that promote the highest standards of safety and security. This membership also provides Nordion with a platform to share its insights and best practices, furthering the global agenda of safe nuclear material transport.

WNTI are pleased to have Nordion on board and are looking forward to working together!
During this year's WNTI Summer SAMM, members of the WNTI had the unique opportunity to visit the Nordion plant in Ottawa, Canada. Nordion is a global leader in providing medical isotopes and gamma technologies that are essential for cancer treatment, sterilisation of medical products and advanced research. The visit offered WNTI members an in-depth look at Nordion's state-of-the-art facilities and their robust safety protocols in handling and transporting radioactive materials. Members were particularly impressed by the plant's commitment to innovation and its stringent adherence to international safety standards, ensuring the secure and efficient distribution of life-saving isotopes worldwide.

The site visit also facilitated valuable discussions between WNTI members and Nordion experts, fostering a collaborative environment for knowledge exchange and best practice sharing. These interactions highlighted the critical role that safe and reliable nuclear transport plays in the broader healthcare and research industries. Attendees were able to gain first-hand insights into the challenges and solutions associated with the logistics of transporting radioactive materials, an aspect that is often overlooked but is crucial for the global supply chain. The experience not only broadened the attendees' understanding but also reinforced the importance of continued collaboration within the nuclear transport community to enhance safety, security and efficiency in the industry.

A huge thank you to the team at Nordion for facilitating such an engaging site visit.
