WNTI participated actively in the IAEA’s 52nd Transport Safety Standards Committee (TRANSSC-52) meeting in Vienna, bringing together 72 experts from 24 countries and 7 international organizations to discuss the future of radioactive material transport safety standards

Key outcomes:

Transportable Nuclear Power Plants (TNPPs): Strong discussions focused on ensuring transport regulations (SSR-6) are explicitly considered in guidance for transportable reactors and innovative technologies.
Denial of Shipment (DoS): The IAEA DoS Working Group approved a White Paper containing recommendations to reduce shipment denials and delays and support the safe and secure movement of radioactive materials worldwide.
SSG-26 Revision: Progress continues on the revision of the main guidance document supporting SSR-6 implementation, including clarification of the regulatory boundary between radioactive material transport and nuclear propulsion systems.

Key upcoming WNTI actions include:

Contributing to the IAEA Technical Meeting on Safe Transport and Innovative Technologies in August 2026.
Gathering member input on the proposed TRANSSC Long-Term Strategy (2027-2037).
Supporting development of the Safety Basis TECDOC.
Participating in the next Denial of Shipment Working Group meeting in December 2026.

TRANSSC-53 is scheduled for November 2026
