Key Outcomes from the IAEA Technical Meeting on the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material

The meeting was structured around eight technical sessions, covering key regulatory and technical issues related to the safe transport of radioactive material. The main outcomes of interest to WNTI members include:

  • New A2 values for medical isotopes: The impact of the significantly reduced A2 values for At-211, Ac-225 and Pb-212, associated with Targeted Alpha Therapy (TAT), was a major focus. The potential implications for the transport of these radiopharmaceuticals and patient treatments were highlighted.
  • Technical working group on TAT: A key outcome was agreement, including from the IAEA, to establish as soon as possible a technical working group reporting to TRANSSC to address the transport implications of the new A2 values.
  • Other key technical topics: The meeting also covered NORM transport, the Transport Index, transport package approval methodologies, and cask ageing management, providing valuable input for ongoing WNTI activities.
