WNA Transport Working Group WNTI Meeting Summary  – 2 September 2024

WNTI had the opportunity to actively participate in the World Nuclear Association Transport Working Group on 2 September 2024 in London, United Kingdom.

During this session, WNTI Specialist, Elisa Penda contributed to the discussions and provided and provided an update on the current and upcoming activities of WNTI. Below we are pleased to provide a summary of the key points discussed during the meeting :

  1. Opening remarks:
  • Sama Bilbao y Leon, Director General of the World Nuclear Association, welcomed the new Chair, Mark

Campbell (ALARA Logistics), and Vice Chair, Anne Presta (Orano).

  • Acknowledged contributions of outgoing leaders, Kurtis Hinz and Tony Grange.
  • Highlighted efforts to address Denial of Shipment issues and the goal of tripling nuclear.

  1. Welcome and Introductions:
  • New Chair and Vice Chair expressed gratitude and welcomed attendees.
  • Former Chair thanked the group for their support during his tenure.
  1. Administration and Updates:
  • Governance guidelines and planned activities for 2024-2025 were reviewed.
  1. Class 7 Transportation by Air:
  • Presentation covered challenges such as compliance, training, operational procedures,

security, and safety concerns.

  • Emphasis on regulations and seamless stakeholder coordination for safe transport.
  1. Issues Related to Russia Sanctions:
  • Update on classification discrepancies of empty Class 7 containers in the U.S., Canada,

and EU.

  • Addressed inclusion of CN Code 8609 in EU sanctions, later clarified as not restricted.
  1. New Member Presentation – Core Power:
  • Focused on nuclear propulsion and transportation challenges for floating nuclear plants.
  • Highlighted regulatory complexities and evolving frameworks.
  1. IAEA Update on Transport of Radioactive Materials:
  • Discussed efforts to address Denial of Shipment issues and proposed a Code of Conduct.
  • Explored alternative mechanisms such as a Joint Statement.
  • Announced surveys, training workshops, and an e-learning module for Class 7 transport.
