The IAEA Interregional Workshop on Safety Considerations for Transportable Nuclear Power Plants (TNPPs) took place in Beijing, China, from 13–17 October 2025, gathering experts from 21 Member States and key international organizations.

Workshop Highlights:

Reviewed IAEA Safety Standards and discussed updates to address TNPP-specific challenges
Explored holistic safety demonstration approaches, balancing nuclear and maritime safety
Addressed hazards and accident scenarios unique to TNPPs, including marine corrosion, capsizing, and collision risks
Discussed transportability aspects, emergency preparedness, waste management, and legal frameworks
Emphasized international cooperation with IMO and UNECE for harmonized safety and regulatory approaches

Representing WNTI, Elisa Penda delivered a presentation titled “Navigating the Future: Powered by Nuclear, Delivered by Transport”, advocating for:

Safety and security by design
Harmonization of nuclear, transport, and maritime regulations
Clear liability frameworks and robust emergency preparedness
Public perception and environmental considerations
