We drive the highest standards of safety and security in the global transport of nuclear and radioactive materials.
We collaborate with industry experts to produce up to date resources that are free to download.
Each day thousands of shipments of radioactive materials are transported around the world.
International Maritime Organisation (IMO) – Maritime Safety Committee
Correspondence Group for the development of a safety regulatory framework to support the reduction of GHG Emissions from ships using New Technologies and Alternative Fuels
WNTI has been participating this Correspondence Group, established by the Maritime Safety Committee at the IMO, that has been examining the framework of existing IMO instruments to identify areas where these regulations may impede the use of newer types of alternative fuel and new technologies that are being developed to help the maritime industry decarbonize.
There are several different options considered, such as;
Adopting nuclear propulsion, along with using nuclear power to produce alternative fuels, is the most viable way to decarbonize shipping on the scale large enough to meet the Zero Emission targets set my the IMO.
It was important to WNTI that nuclear be properly addressed in this work and that it included proposals to update the Code of Safety for Nuclear Merchant Ships.
MSC 110/6 will be presented to the Maritime Safety Committee at its 110th meeting in June 2025.
