Requests to convene an extraordinary session of the Council

The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization presents his compliments and wishes to inform that, pursuant to rule 3 of the Rules of Procedures of the Council, eight Members of the Council have requested that an extraordinary session of the Council be held to address the impacts on shipping and seafarers of the situation in the Arabian Sea, Sea of Oman, and the Gulf Region, particularly in and around the Strait of Hormuz.1 The Council Members requesting the extraordinary session have further asked that the session be held as soon as possible, indicating that they propose to waive the onemonth notice requirement for the session to be held. In addition, four Member States have submitted communications expressing their support to invoke rule 58 of the Rules of Procedure of the Council to waive rule 3 and rule 15 of the Rules of Procedure of the Council.2
