Key Outcomes from the 51st IAEA TRANSSC Meeting

The IAEA Transport Safety Standards Committee (TRANSSC) held its 51st meeting in Vienna in November 2025, advancing several important initiatives for the safe transport of radioactive material.

Key highlights included:

• Approval of major safety standards and guidance documents, including updates related to nuclear installation licensing, regulatory experience feedback management, and the revision of Safety of Nuclear Power Plants: Design (SSR-2/1).
• Growing focus on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Transportable Nuclear Power Plants (TNPPs), with extensive discussions on how existing transport safety requirements (SSR-6) may apply to future reactor transport concepts and where additional regulatory development may be required.
• Establishment of two new Ad-Hoc Working Groups:
  • Transport of radiopharmaceuticals used for targeted alpha therapy.
  • Features added to packages during transport.
• Continued review of the IAEA safety standards development process (SPESS), with discussions on improving efficiency, strengthening stakeholder involvement, and planning future revisions of transport safety standards.
• Preparations for the International Conference on the Safe and Secure Transport of Nuclear and Radioactive Material, scheduled for March 2026 in Vienna, are progressing well.
