NRC Commissioners Approve Rulemaking to Harmonize Transportation Requirements with IAEA Standards

In July, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved the issuance of a proposed rule to harmonize the NRC’s regulations with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) standards and ensure conformance with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.

DOT is planning a similar action to harmonize its regulations with IAEA standards and the NRC rulemaking will help to maintain a consistent federal regulatory framework for the packaging and transportation of radioactive materials, which is coregulated by the NRC and DOT.

The NRC will conduct a public meeting on this proposed rule for the purpose of describing it to the public and to facilitate the development of public comments. The NRC will publish a notice of the location, time, and agenda of the meeting on Regulations.gov and on the NRC’s public meeting Web site at least 10 calendar days before the meeting.
