Overview

The World Nuclear Transport Institute (WNTI) has launched its strategy for 2025–2030, outlining a bold and forward-looking plan to support global innovation, strengthen international cooperation, and ensure the safe, secure and sustainable transport of nuclear and radioactive materials.

As countries accelerate investment in clean energy, advanced reactors, radiopharmaceuticals, and new nuclear technologies, the role of transport has never been more critical. Every breakthrough in nuclear deployment depends on the ability to move materials reliably, responsibly, and efficiently. WNTI’s new strategy recognises this reality and sets out a clear path for the 5 years ahead.

At its core, the strategy focuses on three strategic aims designed to meet the evolving needs of the sector:

Strategic Aim 1: Global Influence & Partnerships

WNTI will strengthen its presence on the world stage – engaging closely with the IAEA, IMO, OECD NEA, ports, competent authorities, and policymakers. The strategy emphasises the importance of ensuring the transport community is effectively heard and understood, while building societal trust through initiatives such as Clear Pathways, which aims to enhance public understanding and confidence in nuclear and radioactive material transport.

Strategic Aim 2: Delivering Impact & Strengthening the Community

Moving beyond dialogue, WNTI will act as a delivery platform for real-world solutions. Member-led Committees and Task Groups will tackle operational challenges, while new technical guidance, position papers, and an expanded programme of events will support shared expertise across the sector. A major new initiative, the WNTI Centre of Excellence, will help develop skills, talent and training for the next generation of transport professionals.

Strategic Aim 3: Future-Proofing Transport for a Changing World

With rapid innovation across nuclear technologies – from advanced fuels and logistics systems to Transportable Nuclear Power Plants – WNTI will help the sector prepare for what comes next. The strategy focuses on anticipating infrastructure gaps, encouraging regulatory alignment, championing low-carbon and circular practices, and supporting long-term resilience in the face of global risks and climate pressures.

Embedding ESG Across All Strategic Aims

Underpinning all three aims is WNTI’s strong commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles, ensuring the organisation leads responsibly, transparently and inclusively.

“This strategy reflects our ambition to drive progress across the global transport community and support the next generation of nuclear innovation,” said Professor Pete Bryant, CEO of WNTI. “Nothing in our sector moves forward without transport—and we are ready to lead the next phase.”

WNTI invites industry, governments, regulators and partners to join in delivering this shared future:

Forward together – safely, securely, sustainably.
