The IAEA Technical Meeting will be held in Vienna, Austria, from 17 to 21 August 2026. Its purpose is to bring together transport experts and regulators from Member States and industry to exchange experience and discuss key challenges related to the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material (SSR‑6).

Several WNTI members will represent the organisation at this IAEA Technical Meeting and are scheduled to deliver five presentations. WNTI is proud to contribute its expertise and to engage with international stakeholders on key challenges and emerging topics in the safe transport of radioactive material.

Topics

The meeting will cover a broad spectrum of relevant topics, including:

  • Changes in SSR-6 Rev.2 (2025 Edition), including new A1/A2 values and fissile exceptions:
    – IAEA indicated the AdHoc TAT (Targeted Alpha Therapy ) WG is not started as inputs from the industry is expected first.
  • Implementation challenges from TS-R-1 (1996 Edition) to SSR-6 Rev.2 (2025 Edition)
  • Key generic issues, such as:
    – Transport of SCO and LSA materials (classification, compliance, discrepancies)
    – NORM exemptions
    – Transport Index concept (clarification and discrepancies)
    – Safety limits on seagoing vessels
    – Structure of SSR-6
  • Innovative transport technologies (e.g. alternative fuel conveyances and AI applications)
